The state of AI search for small business: Q3 2026.

AI search adoption is accelerating faster than the industry's own terminology can keep up with. Here's what the data actually shows, updated every quarter.

This is the first edition of a report Answer Visible plans to keep publishing every quarter: what's actually happening in AI search, backed by real numbers instead of agency talking points. AI search adoption is accelerating faster than the industry's own terminology can keep up with, and businesses figuring out the fundamentals now are building an advantage that compounds every quarter they wait, whether they call it AEO, GEO, or nothing at all yet.

AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of tracked Google searches, and ChatGPT has crossed 900 million weekly active users (BrightEdge and OpenAI via Reuters, both February 2026). Meanwhile, search interest in the terminology describing this shift, terms like "GEO AI," is up 650% year over year (Google Trends, United States, past 12 months, pulled July 2026). Adoption and confusion are climbing at the same time, which is exactly why a plain accounting of the landscape is overdue.

The terminology hasn't caught up with the behavior

If you've heard this called AEO in one place and GEO in another and felt like you missed a memo, you didn't. Nobody in the industry has settled on one name yet, and the search data proves it.

Term
Search interest signal
What it tells you
"chatgpt for seo"

Peaked at 100, the highest of any phrase tested

Most people don't search using specialized terminology at all. They ask about the platform directly.

"AI visibility"

Averaged 51/100 over the past year

The plain-language, platform-agnostic framing is nearly as searched as anything else, and easier to actually understand.

"GEO AI"

Up 650% year over year

Generative engine optimization, GEO for short, is the newer of the two dominant industry terms and is growing fast.

"AEO services" / "AEO marketing"

Up 550% / 250% year over year

Answer engine optimization is the more established term, still climbing, increasingly searched with buyer intent.

"LLM optimization"

Smaller volume, fastest recent growth curve

The newest entrant. Small today, worth watching.

(Google Trends, United States, past 12 months, pulled July 2026.)

The businesses figuring this out now are figuring it out ahead of their competitors, not behind them.

Whatever any of these terms end up being called permanently, the underlying question stays the same: when someone asks an AI tool something your business could answer, does your name come up. That's the question this report tracks, not the terminology. For the full breakdown of what AEO actually means, see what is answer engine optimization, a plain-language definition.

The adoption numbers, in one place

What's actually different, platform to platform

Every AI platform pulls from different sources, which is part of why a single fix doesn't cover all of them.

ChatGPT

Draws on a mix of training data and real-time web content, and tends to name more businesses per answer with more descriptive context than the others. Directory presence and genuinely useful written content matter more here than a Google Business Profile does. See how to show up in ChatGPT search results.

Google AI Overviews

Leans hardest on Google Business Profile completeness and review activity, since it's pulling from the Google ecosystem directly: Maps, reviews, posts.

Gemini

Pulls from a wider geographic net and tends to reward real differentiation, a specific niche or a genuinely unique angle, over generic positioning.

Perplexity

Runs a live search on every query and shows its sources, numbered, in the answer itself. It rewards content that's already structured for a direct, specific answer. A page written to earn a Google featured snippet often earns a Perplexity citation for free.

What this means if you haven't started yet

The businesses showing up in AI answers today aren't just ahead for the moment. AI systems build trust in a business gradually, through consistent reviews, directory listings, and content, not in a single visit. That process takes months, and it doesn't start until a business begins doing the work. A competitor can copy a homepage. They can't copy a head start built on time and consistency.

The good news: this doesn't require learning an entirely new discipline. It requires the fundamentals done well enough that a machine, not just a person, can tell what a business does and trust what it says about itself. Start with a complete, active Google Business Profile, it's free and it feeds directly into local AI answers. From there, structured content and consistent signals across the web do the rest.
