If you're a solo founder or a small team, AI search visibility isn't a strategy problem. It's a checklist problem. Get four foundational things in place, and most of what gets written about AEO becomes optional until your business is a lot bigger than it is today.
A lot of AI search content out there is built around a specific kind of business: established, credentialed, sitting on a reputation that simply isn't showing up online yet. The advice that follows is proportional to that problem, competitive audits, custom frameworks, phased rollouts. None of that is wrong for the business it's built for. It's just built for a different business than yours.
Why most AI search advice isn't written for you
If you're a solo founder, your problem usually isn't hidden credentials. It's more basic than that: an unclaimed Google Business Profile, a website that doesn't say clearly what you do, or no structured way for AI to confirm you're a real, active business. That's a smaller problem to name, and a faster one to fix, before anything resembling a "strategy" is worth paying for.
In Answer Visible's own research across 28 independent Tampa Bay acupuncture practices, about 60% were never cited once across any AI platform tested. The gap between the practices that got cited and the ones that didn't tracked back to a handful of basic signals, not a formal strategy.
Your problem is probably smaller than the content says it is.
The four things that actually move the needle
Skip everything else until these four are done.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Every field filled, the right category, real photos, a description that sounds like your actual business. This is the single biggest lever for local AI answers, and it's free.
- Add basic schema markup. A few lines of structured data that tell search engines and AI exactly what your page is: a local business, a service, a set of frequently asked questions. Without it, AI has to guess at what you do.
- Write pages that answer real questions. Not generic blog posts. Pages that answer the specific things your customers actually ask, with the answer stated plainly in the first paragraph.
- Make your name, address, and phone number match everywhere. Your website, your Google Business Profile, every directory you're listed on. Inconsistency is one of the fastest ways to lose trust with both search engines and AI.

These aren't scams. They're built for a business at a later stage, one that already has the fundamentals live and is optimizing what's left. Paying for this kind of analysis before your Google Business Profile is even claimed is paying to be told what this guide just told you for free.
- Competitive intelligence audits
- Custom multi-phase frameworks
- Anything priced after a "discovery call"
- Modeled dollar-figure estimates of what you're "losing"
Two different starting points
AI search visibility work looks different depending on where a business is starting from. Most content assumes the version on the left. Most founder-led small businesses are actually living the version on the right.
Credentials and reputation exist, but aren't visible to AI
Basic online presence may not exist yet
Strategic audit, custom framework, phased rollout
A short, specific list of things to fix
Structured data that reflects real-world authority
Claimed profiles, a working website, consistent business info
Weeks of discovery, months of implementation
Days to weeks, once prioritized correctly
How long this actually takes
There's no honest fixed answer, but there's an honest range. Google Business Profile changes can surface in local AI answers within days to weeks. Content that earns AI citation typically takes one to three months to appear consistently, once the fundamentals are in place. Anyone promising faster than that is either wrong or not talking about AI search.
The takeaways
- Most AI search advice is written for businesses with hidden credentials. If that's not your situation, most of it doesn't apply yet.
- About 60% of practices in Answer Visible's Tampa Bay acupuncture study were never cited once, and the gap tracked back to foundational signals, not strategy.
- Four things matter first: claimed Google Business Profile, basic schema, real question-answering content, and consistent business information everywhere you're listed.
- Competitive audits and custom frameworks are for a later stage. Don't pay for that analysis before the basics are live.
